Stainless Steel Signage in Dubai: 3D Letters and Logos Chosen for Heat, Salt Air and a Close Look
A stainless steel sign is usually the most expensive sign a business puts up, and it is the one people look at from closest: at a reception desk, on a villa gate, beside a jewellery shop door. That is why the questions that matter are not only about the logo. Which grade of steel will hold up a few hundred metres from the sea in Dubai Marina? Will a mirror finish show every fingerprint? Can the letters be lit? Will the sign pass the new shopfront rules? And how often will someone need to clean it in a city where it hardly rains?
Marhaba Advertising designs, produces and installs stainless steel signage Dubai businesses use for shopfronts, reception walls, building names, hotels, clinics and villas: 3D stainless steel letters, logos, flat cut letters and name plates, in brushed, mirror polished and gold PVD finishes, lit or non-lit, alongside the rest of our اللافتات ثلاثية الأبعاد work. With 7+ years in business and 1000+ completed projects as a شركة لافتات في دبي, we have learnt that most problems with metal signs come from choices made before fabrication starts, so we cover those choices first.

What Counts as Stainless Steel Signage: SS Letters, Logos and Plates
Stainless steel signage covers any sign where the visible letters, logo or plate are made from stainless steel sheet. In Dubai it is often called SS signage, SS letters, an SS signboard or simply a stainless steel signboard. The main types:

Fabricated 3D Stainless Steel Letters
Hollow letters built from a laser cut face welded to side walls, called returns, to give depth. These are the raised metal letters most people picture on a shop fascia or office lobby wall, and the type that can carry LED lighting inside.

Flat Cut Stainless Steel Letters
Letters laser cut from a single solid sheet, usually a few millimetres thick, and fixed to the wall on studs. They suit small text, reception walls and lift lobbies where depth is less important than crisp edges.

Company logos cut and built in the same way as letters. Complex logos are often made in layers, or combined with acrylic for colour, see our لافتات أكريليك دبي الصفحة.

Stainless Steel Name Plates and Plaques
Flat plates with engraved, etched or raised text: villa name plates, office door plates, building plaques and opening plaques. Engraved metal signs keep their text for the life of the plate because there is no print layer to fade.

Stainless steel letters mounted on an acrylic, aluminium or كسوة ACP دبي panel, which helps on uneven walls, glass partitions and rented units where the owner does not want holes drilled into stone.
Steel Grade
304 or 316: Choosing the Grade for Your Dubai Address
This is the decision that most affects how a stainless steel sign looks in five years, and the one most often skipped in quotes.
Grade 304 is the standard "18/8" stainless steel and, according to US sign manufacturer Gemini, the most versatile and widely used grade for signage. Grade 316 adds 2 to 3% molybdenum, which Wikipedia's marine grade stainless entry links to its greater resistance to pitting corrosion from chlorides such as salt. Gemini states that 316 gives better corrosion resistance than 304 in chloride-rich environments and suggests it for locations within 50 miles, about 80 km, of a coastline. Almost every address in Dubai sits well within that distance of the Gulf.
Australian steel supplier Atlas Steels goes further in its cleaning and maintenance guide: for coastal or marine sites it lists grade 304 as "not suitable", and grade 316 as needing cleaning every 3 to 6 months.
Widely used for signage. Best kept indoors or under cover in Dubai.
Better against salt and chlorides. Recommended for Dubai exteriors.
How this works out across Dubai:
One honest note: Gemini's own guidance says it does not recommend stainless steel in coastal or humid climates at all, and suggests anodised aluminium there instead. We think 316, a smooth finish and a realistic cleaning plan make stainless steel a sound choice for most Dubai exteriors, but if nobody will be able to clean a sign high up on a beachfront tower, painted or anodised aluminium letters may be the better buy, and we will say so.

Brushed, Mirror or Gold: Stainless Steel Finishes Explained
Brushed Stainless Steel
A satin, hairline texture made by abrading the surface in one direction. It hides fingerprints and small scratches better than any other finish and gives a quiet, corporate look. It suits office signage, hotel back-of-house and outdoor signs that will be touched or cleaned often.
Mirror Polished Stainless Steel
Polished to a reflective, glossy surface. Gemini notes that grit lines may be visible up close at some angles but disappear once the sign is installed, and that polished flat letters should be at least 1/8 inch, about 3 mm, thick with a stroke of at least 1/2 inch, about 13 mm. Mirror finish reflects whatever is opposite, so a sign facing a busy road or a bright sky can be hard to read at certain times of day. New Zealand fastener supplier Anzor notes that the smoother the finish, the better stainless steel resists corrosion, which works in mirror polish's favour outdoors.
Gold Stainless Steel Letters and PVD Colours
Gold, rose gold, bronze and black stainless steel letters are made with PVD (physical vapour deposition), a coating bonded to the steel, often marketed as titanium coated stainless steel. It is not real gold. One PVD stainless sheet manufacturer estimates the finish lasts about 12 to 18 years outdoors and longer indoors, and recommends cleaning with mild cleaners only, because abrasive pads can damage the coating. Gold PVD is popular with jewellery, hospitality and luxury retail brands, see our jewellery shop signage Dubai الصفحة.
Bead-Blasted and Painted Returns
The face and returns of a letter do not have to match. Gemini's standard for polished letters is a polished face with bead-blasted returns, which softens reflections from the side. Returns can also be painted in a brand colour.

Lit or Non-Lit Stainless Steel Letters
Halo Lit Stainless Steel Letters
LED modules inside the letter shine onto the wall behind, creating a glow around each letter while the steel face stays solid. Gemini describes this as halo lighting; in Dubai these are also often called backlit stainless steel letters. Gemini recommends mounting halo lit letters on a 1.5 inch, about 38 mm, standoff so the light can spread. Its halo lit stainless steel range runs from 2.5 to 36 inches, about 6 to 91 cm, tall, with larger letters made in sections. Halo lighting works best on a smooth, light-coloured wall; on dark or textured walls the glow is weaker.
Face Lit Letters With Stainless Steel Returns
The face is made from translucent acrylic so the whole letter glows, while the returns are stainless steel. This gives a bright sign at night with a metal look by day. For the full range of illuminated letters, see our channelume letters Dubai و اللافتات ذات الإضاءة الخلفية pages, and our لافتات LED في دبي .
Non-Illuminated Stainless Steel Letters
Many reception walls and premium shopfronts use no lighting at all, relying on spotlights or the finish itself. Non-lit letters are thinner, simpler to fix and need no power point.
Permits and Rules
Dubai Shopfront Rules That Affect Stainless Steel Signs
On 12 May 2026, the Government of Dubai Media Office set out the shopfront signage framework applied by the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), which issues trade-name signage permits and inspects shopfronts. The specifications sit in Section 3.4 of the Outdoor Advertising Manual issued by the RTA and Dubai Municipality with Mada Media. The rules that matter most for a metal sign:
Each establishment may display one trade name on its shopfront; extra trade names or adverts are not allowed.
Signs must be horizontal, not vertical, with the Arabic text placed above the English.
Sign dimensions must suit the height and width of the shopfront, without excessive height, width or thickness.
Brightness must stay within permitted levels, and bright white backgrounds should be avoided.
No moving, changing or video content on the sign.
Signs are not permitted on balconies or on the external facades of offices, clinics and commercial outlets above the ground floor.
We set out the Arabic and English layout, letter heights and lighting with these rules in mind, and the business owner or their agent applies for the DET permit under the trade licence. Rules can change, so always check the current requirements with DET before ordering.

Mounting and Installation on Dubai Facades
How a stainless steel sign is fixed affects how it looks as much as the finish does.
Stud mounting with spacers. Threaded studs are welded to the back of each letter and fixed into drilled holes, with spacers holding the letter off the wall. This standoff creates a shadow line, lets halo lighting spread, and stops metal touching the wall. Gemini notes that on stucco surfaces, standoffs prevent material from bleeding onto the wall.
Drilling template. A full-size paper template marks every stud position so letters sit straight and evenly spaced. We check the template on site before any drilling.
Wall types. Stone, render, ACP, glass and gypsum each need different fixings. Glass usually needs a backing panel or special fixings; gypsum partitions need a plywood or steel backing behind them.
Weight. Stainless steel is heavier than aluminium, which, as sign maker Shield Co points out, makes it harder to install. Large letters high up on a facade need fixings checked for the weight and for wind load.
Power. Lit letters need a power point and an LED driver positioned so it can be reached for maintenance.
Access. High-level installs on towers and malls may need building management approval, permits to work and access equipment, which we arrange with the site team.
Care and Cleaning
Cleaning Stainless Steel Signs in a City With Little Rainfall
In most coastal cities, rain washes salt and dust off metal signs. Atlas Steels calls natural rain an effective cleaner and says items not washed by rain need more frequent cleaning. Dubai is not one of those cities: Wikipedia's Climate of Dubai page lists Dubai International Airport's 1991 to 2020 average at about 79 mm of rainfall a year, with average humidity of 59% and summer highs above 43°C in July and August. Salt and fine dust settle on the steel and stay there.
What that means for your sign:
Tea staining. Brown discolouration on stainless steel exposed to salt is called tea staining. Anzor describes it as cosmetic only, not structural, and recommends a minimum of 316 marine grade steel, the smoothest practical finish and regular washing.
Cleaning schedule. For coastal 316 steel, Atlas Steels suggests cleaning every 3 to 6 months. Its rule of thumb is to clean the steel whenever the nearby glass is cleaned.
How to clean. Atlas Steels recommends soap or mild detergent and warm water with a sponge, then a rinse with clean water, and wiping dry along the polish lines.
What to avoid. Never use ordinary steel wool, which leaves iron particles that rust on the surface; stainless steel wool or Scotch-Brite pads are acceptable. Chloride bleach and hypochlorite cleaners must be rinsed off promptly, because chlorides cause pitting. On gold PVD, use mild cleaners and soft cloths only.
If tea staining does appear, a phosphoric acid gel recommended by the Nickel Institute, as Anzor reports, usually removes it.

Material Comparison
Stainless Steel, Aluminium or Brass: Which Metal Suits Your Sign?
Stainless steel. The heaviest of the three and usually the most expensive, with the widest choice of finishes, from brushed to mirror to PVD colours. Shield Co describes stainless steel as often regarded as the more durable option.
Aluminium. Lighter and less expensive, as Shield Co notes, which makes it easier to install on facades that cannot carry much weight. It is usually painted or anodised rather than polished.
Brass. A warm, traditional gold colour, but solid brass tarnishes unless lacquered and cleaned. Gold PVD stainless steel gives a similar look with less upkeep.

Experience
What We Have Learnt From 7+ Years of Signage Work in Dubai
Over more than seven years and 1000+ completed projects, a few patterns come up again and again with metal signs:
Two quotes that look alike can be for 304 and 316 steel. Always ask which grade is quoted, especially for exterior signs.
It looks striking in renders, but outdoors it reflects the sky and the street. Ask to see finish samples in daylight before you decide.
A halo glow on a dark textured wall is barely visible. We check the wall colour and texture at the site visit.
Very thin fonts and fine logo details are hard to fabricate in steel and can bend. We adjust stroke widths at the design stage rather than after cutting.
Arabic letters connect and have dots and marks that are easy to lose in metal. Arabic text must be set by someone who reads it, and placed above the English for shopfront signs.
A sign that nobody can reach will not be cleaned. We ask who will clean it, and how, before recommending a finish.

What Affects Stainless Steel Signage Cost in Dubai
We have not found a reliable published AED price for stainless steel signage Dubai buyers can compare against, and none of the Dubai competitor pages we reviewed publish one, so we explain what drives the price instead.
Letter height and count. Taller letters and more characters use more steel and more fabrication time.
Grade. 316 costs more than 304.
Construction. Fabricated 3D letters with returns cost more than flat cut letters.
Finish. Mirror polish and PVD gold, rose gold or black cost more than brushed.
Lighting. Halo lit or face lit letters add LEDs, drivers, wiring and power connections.
Logo complexity. Fine details, layered logos and mixed materials add time.
التركيب. Height, wall type, access equipment and building approvals.

الأسئلة الشائعة
Frequently Asked Questions: Stainless Steel Signage in Dubai
For outdoor signs, 316. It contains 2 to 3% molybdenum, which improves resistance to salt and chlorides, and steel supplier Atlas Steels rates 304 as not suitable for coastal sites. Grade 304 is usually fine indoors, in air-conditioned lobbies and in mall interiors.
Stainless steel does not rust like ordinary steel, but salt and dust can cause brown surface marks called tea staining, especially on 304 outdoors. Tea staining is cosmetic. Choosing 316, a smooth finish and cleaning every 3 to 6 months keeps it under control.
Brushed steel has a satin, hairline texture that hides fingerprints and scratches. Mirror polished steel is glossy and reflective, with more impact but more visible marks and reflections. Brushed suits signs people touch; mirror suits entrances and feature walls.
No. Gold, rose gold, bronze and black letters are stainless steel with a PVD coating bonded to the surface, sometimes called titanium coated stainless steel. Clean them with mild cleaners and soft cloths only.
Yes. Halo lit letters glow onto the wall behind and are mounted on a standoff, about 38 mm on one US manufacturer's specification. Face lit letters use an acrylic face with stainless steel returns so the whole letter glows. Non-lit letters need no power at all.
Wash with mild detergent and warm water using a sponge, rinse with clean water and wipe dry along the polish lines. Never use ordinary steel wool, and rinse off any chloride bleach straight away.
Yes. DET issues trade-name signage permits and inspects shopfronts. Signs must show one trade name, be horizontal with Arabic above English, stay within brightness limits and not be placed on upper-floor facades of offices, clinics and shops.
Usually with threaded studs welded to the back of each letter and spacers that hold it off the wall, positioned using a full-size drilling template. Glass and gypsum walls need backing panels or special fixings.
It depends on grade, finish, location and cleaning. A 316 sign that is cleaned regularly keeps its look for many years. For gold and coloured PVD, one manufacturer estimates about 12 to 18 years outdoors and longer indoors.
Yes. We make stainless steel name plates with engraved, etched or raised text for villa gates, boundary walls, office doors and building entrances, in brushed, mirror or gold PVD finishes.
