Wayfinding and Directional Signage in Dubai for Clinics, Hotels, Malls and Multi-Floor Buildings
A patient arrives ten minutes before an appointment, steps out of the lift on the third floor, and sees two identical corridors and no sign. She asks the cleaner. The cleaner points the wrong way. By the time she finds the clinic, she is late and anxious, and the front desk has to calm her down before anyone can help her. Nothing about that visit was medical. It was a signage problem, and it happens in Dubai buildings every day.

Wayfinding Signage in Dubai
Marhaba Advertising is a Dubai sign maker in Al Quoz Industrial Area 4 that designs, fabricates and installs wayfinding signage: entrance and lift lobby directories, directional signs at corridor junctions, ceiling-hung signs, room and department identification, and floor and wall graphics, in English or bilingual Arabic and English, for clinics, hotels, malls, warehouses and office floors. Published Dubai market prices in 2026 run roughly AED 300 to AED 800 per directional sign, AED 1,000 to AED 3,000 per directory board, and AED 5,000 to AED 25,000 for a complete system in a mid-sized commercial building, with large hospital or mall systems going above AED 50,000. Accessibility for signage in Dubai is set by the Dubai Universal Design Code, which places wall-mounted tactile signs with their centre at 1,500 mm above the floor, not by the American ADA standard. Production typically takes 7 to 14 days after the sign schedule and design are approved. Call +971 56 372 1614 or email info@marhabaadv.com.
Wayfinding signage in Dubai is the system of directories, directional signs, identification signs and floor graphics that gets a first-time visitor from the entrance door to the right room without asking anyone. Good directional signage is invisible: people simply arrive. Bad signage shows up as late patients, lost hotel guests, delivery drivers wandering a warehouse, and receptionists who spend half their day giving directions. Marhaba Advertising plans, fabricates and installs complete wayfinding systems from our Al Quoz workshop, with every sign in one family of materials, fonts and colours. As a شركة لافتات في دبي that builds in-house, we walk your building first, mark every point where a visitor has to make a decision, and design the sign schedule around those points rather than around the floor plan. This page sits under our لافتات داخلية دبي range. If you are fitting out a single office floor, our office signage Dubai page covers that package, including reception logos and name plates.

The Visitor Route
Follow One Visitor Through a Dubai Building: Where Each Sign Goes
A wayfinding system is easiest to understand from the visitor's side. Here is the route, and the sign that has to be waiting at each step.
At the Entrance: Identification and the Main Directory
The first question is "am I in the right building?" The building name and the tenant or department directory answer it. The Dubai Universal Design Code expects business and administration buildings to show their name on the facade and a directory inside the lobby. Exterior name signs are covered on our اللافتات الخارجية page, and any sign facing the street may need a permit, which our signage permit approval Dubai page explains.
At the Lift Lobby: Floor Directories
On arrival at a floor, the visitor needs to confirm the floor number and see which way to turn. A floor directory directly opposite the lift doors, listing destinations with an arrow for each direction, settles this before the visitor takes a step.
At Every Junction: Directional Signs
Every corridor split, every corner and every set of double doors is a decision point. Each one gets a directional sign that repeats the destination name and points the way. The Dubai Universal Design Code checklist calls for orientation signs at intervals of 30 metres in buildings, so on long corridors a sign is needed even where there is no junction, to reassure visitors they have not missed a turn.
At the Door: Room and Department Identification
The last sign confirms arrival: the room number, department or clinic name beside the door, on the latch side, at a consistent height on every door in the building.
On the Way Out: Exit Routes and Safety Signs
Visitors leave by a different route than they arrived, often in a hurry. Exit and safety signs are their own category with their own rules, covered further down this page.

Wayfinding Sign Types and Materials We Fabricate in Dubai

Wall-Mounted and Projecting Signs
Flat wall signs for room identification and directories, and projecting signs fixed at right angles to the wall so they can be read from down a corridor. Typical materials are لافتات الأكريليك, brushed aluminium, and stainless steel, with printed or cut vinyl text.
Ceiling-hung signsCeiling-Hung Signs
Signs suspended from the ceiling on cables or rods, double-sided, for open-plan spaces, mall corridors and hospital main streets where a wall sign would be hidden by people. They need clear headroom below them and a fixing point the ceiling can actually carry, which is why we check ceiling construction before quoting.

Freestanding Directories and Totems
Floor-standing directories for lobbies and atriums where there is no suitable wall, or where the directory has to sit in the middle of the space. These can be lit with ولافتات LED components for low-light areas.

Floor and Wall Vinyl Graphics
Colour-coded floor lines, painted-look vinyl arrows and large wall graphics for warehouses, car parks and hospitals. A green line on the floor to the pharmacy is often more effective than any sign on the wall. Larger wall pieces are printed on our الطباعة بالحجم الكبير equipment, and full-wall pieces are covered on our wall graphics Dubai الصفحة.

Changeable Insert Systems
Sign frames with slide-in inserts, so a tenant name or a doctor's name can be changed without replacing the whole sign. Essential for any building where occupants change, and covered in more detail in the maintenance section below.

Wayfinding Signage Prices in Dubai for 2026
Prices below are published Dubai market ranges from local signage suppliers in 2026. They are a guide to the market, not our quote.
| Sign or system | Published Dubai range |
|---|---|
| Basic indoor identification sign | AED 150 to AED 500 |
| Directional sign | AED 300 to AED 800 |
| Directory board | AED 1,000 to AED 3,000 |
| Outdoor wayfinding sign | AED 1,500 to AED 2,500 and up |
| Complete wayfinding system, mid-sized commercial building | AED 5,000 to AED 25,000 |
| Large hospital or mall system | above AED 50,000 in fabrication alone |
At the very low end, simple printed direction signs on PVC board are advertised online from under AED 100 each, which is fine for a temporary event route but not for a permanent building system.
Our quote is built from the sign schedule: the count of each sign type, materials, whether signs are lit, bilingual text, tactile requirements, and installation access. Two buildings with the same floor area can have very different sign counts. A straight corridor needs a fraction of the signs a building with three lift cores and a podium car park needs.
Send us your floor plans, and we will count the decision points and build your sign schedule.
Accessibility
What the Dubai Universal Design Code Asks of Signage
Dubai has its own accessibility code, and wayfinding is one of the areas it covers in detail. The points below come from the code itself. Your architect or accessibility consultant interprets it for your project, and we fabricate and install to that interpretation.
Tactile Letters and Braille
The code says tactile letters, numbers and symbols should be raised at least 0.8 mm and be between 16 mm and 50 mm high, in upper case, embossed rather than engraved. A wall-mounted tactile sign should have its centre at 1,500 mm, plus or minus 25 mm, above the floor. The code treats Braille as good design practice alongside tactile characters, and keeps tactile signs to short messages such as a floor number or a toilet symbol. Tactile and Braille signs are a specialist product. If your project needs them, tell us at the start so we can confirm the production method and lead time with the quote.
Contrast, Glare and Spacing
The code asks for letters, numbers, symbols and pictographs that are glare-free with high reflectance contrast against their background. That rules out glossy acrylic with mirror text, and some fashionable grey-on-grey colour schemes. It also asks designers to avoid visual clutter and keep the information on each sign to a minimum.
Who Checks Compliance
Accessibility is reviewed as part of the building's approvals, so the specification should come from the project's consultant. We provide sign drawings showing mounting heights, letter sizes and finishes for that review.
Common Mistake
Myth: ADA-Compliant Signs Are Dubai-Compliant
Many sign catalogues sold in the UAE advertise "ADA compliant" signage. ADA is the American accessibility standard, written in inches, and it measures tactile sign height differently: the baseline of the lowest tactile character at no less than 48 inches above the floor and the highest at no more than 60 inches. The Dubai code fixes the centre of the sign at 1,500 mm. The two can overlap on a given sign, but they are not the same rule. ADA also says nothing about Arabic text. A sign pack specified only to ADA can pass a supplier's checklist and still fail the building's accessibility review. When a drawing or quote says "ADA", ask which code the building is actually being assessed against.
| Point | Dubai Universal Design Code | ADA (United States) |
|---|---|---|
| Units | Millimetres | Inches |
| What is measured | Centre of the wall-mounted tactile sign | Baseline of the tactile characters |
| Height rule | 1,500 mm, plus or minus 25 mm | Lowest baseline at least 48 in, highest at most 60 in |
Directory Maps
The Upside-Down Map Problem in Dubai Building Directories
Here is a mistake we see in malls, hospitals and business parks across Dubai. A "you are here" floor plan is printed with north at the top, because that is how the architect's drawing is oriented, and fixed to a wall that faces south. The visitor looks at the map, sees the pharmacy "above" them, walks forward, and ends up going the wrong way.
Research on you-are-here maps going back to Marvin Levine's 1982 study in Environment and Behavior set out the principle: align the map with the space, so that "forward" for the person standing at the map is "up" on the map. Later work found that the effort of mentally rotating a map grows the further it is turned, up to 180 degrees, and that a misaligned map can cancel out the benefit of landmarks drawn on it.
The practical fix is simple, but it means each directory map is drawn for its own location. A building with four lobby directories gets four differently rotated maps, each with the you-are-here marker and a landmark the visitor can see from where they stand, such as the lifts or the main entrance. We draw each map for its own wall rather than printing one map four times.
Sign Wording
Name Things the Way Dubai Visitors Say Them
The most common wayfinding failure is not a missing sign. It is a sign that uses a word nobody is looking for. A hospital labels a corridor "Diagnostic Imaging" when patients ask for "X-ray". A hotel signs "Function Rooms" when guests are looking for "the ballroom" or the name on their wedding invitation. A business centre lists a company by its legal trading name, when visitors know it by its brand.
Before we write any sign text, we ask the people at reception and security what visitors ask them for, in their own words, in English and in Arabic. Those words go on the signs. Where a formal name is required, the everyday word goes beside it. The second rule is consistency: the name on the lobby directory, the junction signs and the door must match exactly. "Radiology" on the directory and "Imaging" on the door makes a visitor doubt they are in the right place.

Arabic and English
Bilingual Arabic and English Wayfinding in Dubai
Many Dubai buildings, and most government-facing and healthcare buildings, sign in both Arabic and English. On a directional sign, the hard part is the arrow. Arabic reads right to left and English left to right, so a sign that places the arrow at the "start" of each language ends up with two arrows, or an arrow that sits awkwardly between them. We set one arrow per destination, on the side the visitor is being sent, and arrange both languages so each reads naturally from it. Arabic text is checked by a fluent reader on the proof for correct letter joining and direction before anything is cut. If you already have approved Arabic names for your departments, send them with the floor plan.
النطاق
Fire Exit and Safety Signs in Dubai Buildings: Where Our Scope Stops
Fire exit and life safety signs in the UAE are governed by the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and checked by Civil Defence. Their number, position, size and type, including any illuminated or photoluminescent exit signs and low-level escape route marking, are set by your fire safety consultant and installed under their supervision. We do not design fire safety systems or certify compliance.
What we do is make sure the wayfinding system works around them. Directional signs never compete with or obscure an exit sign, the two families are visually distinct so nobody confuses "Exit" with "Car Park", and where your consultant's specification includes general safety signs that fall within our products, we fabricate them exactly to that specification.
Building Types
Wayfinding by Building Type in Dubai
Clinics and Hospitals
Visitors are often unwell, anxious or elderly, and many read Arabic first. Use colour-coded zones, short destination names, large text, and floor lines to high-traffic departments. Keep every sign consistent with the appointment letter and the reception script.
Hotels and Serviced Apartments
Guests need three things: their room, the facilities, and the way out to taxis. Room number signs at every lift lobby showing which numbers lie in which direction are the single most useful sign in a hotel. Finishes usually match the interior design, so we sample materials against the actual corridor finishes.
Malls and Retail Centres
Large open spaces, many destinations that change with tenants, and visitors who do not know the building. Ceiling-hung signs for main routes, freestanding directories at every entrance and atrium, and changeable inserts for tenant names.
Warehouses and Industrial Units in Al Quoz and Jebel Ali
Drivers, pickers and contractors need zone and bay numbers they can read from a forklift, pedestrian routes that are clearly separate from vehicle routes, and loading bay identification visible from the yard. Floor marking and large wall numbers do most of the work.
Office Floors
A single office floor usually needs a floor directory, junction signs and door signs in the same family as the reception logo. Our office signage Dubai page covers this package, including backlit signage for reception and تفريغ خصوصية المكاتب for glass meeting rooms.

المراحل
How We Deliver a Wayfinding Project in Dubai
Walk the Route and Map Decision Points
We walk the building from every entrance, including the car park and the service entrance, and mark every point where a first-time visitor has to choose a direction.
Build the Sign Schedule
Every sign gets a code, a location on the plan, a type, a size and its exact text. You approve the schedule before design, so the sign count and the quote are fixed early.
Prototype One Sign On Site
For larger projects we make one of each main sign type and fix it in place temporarily, so you can check height, size, colour and readability in the real light of the building before the full run is made.
Fabricate and Install
Signs are fabricated at our Al Quoz workshop, typically in 7 to 14 days after approval, and installed by our own team, out of hours where the building requires it.
Planning a fit-out? Bring signage in early, alongside the design, not at the end.
After Handover
Keeping a Dubai Wayfinding System Accurate After Handover
A wayfinding system starts going out of date the week after it is installed. A tenant moves, a clinic renames a department, a meeting room becomes a store room. Within a year, a building with no plan for updates has signs that point to places that no longer exist, and visitors stop trusting all of them.
Three things keep a system honest. Changeable inserts for anything that will change: tenant names, doctors, departments. A digital copy of the sign schedule and artwork, so a replacement insert matches the original exactly, years later. And one named person in the building who tells us when something changes. We keep the files for every system we install, so a replacement sign can be produced without redrawing it.

الأسئلة الشائعة
Frequently Asked Questions: Wayfinding Signage in Dubai
Directional signs are one part of a wayfinding system: the arrows at junctions. Wayfinding is the whole system, including directories, identification signs at doors, floor graphics and maps, planned together so a visitor can get from the entrance to a destination without asking anyone.
Published 2026 Dubai market prices put a complete system for a mid-sized commercial building at roughly AED 5,000 to AED 25,000, with individual directional signs around AED 300 to AED 800 and directory boards around AED 1,000 to AED 3,000. Large hospital and mall systems go above AED 50,000. We quote from a sign schedule.
The Dubai Universal Design Code. It sets requirements for tactile letters, contrast, glare and mounting height, including a 1,500 mm centre height for wall-mounted tactile signs. The American ADA standard is not the binding code for Dubai buildings.
Tactile and Braille signs are a specialist product. Tell us at the start of the project if your building needs them, and we will confirm the production method, compliance details and lead time with the quote.
Fire and life safety signs follow the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and are specified by your fire safety consultant. We do not certify fire compliance. We fabricate safety signs within our product range exactly to the consultant's specification and design the wayfinding system so it never obscures or competes with exit signs.
It depends on decision points, not floor area. Every entrance, lift lobby, corridor junction and destination door needs a sign, and the Dubai Universal Design Code checklist calls for orientation signs at 30 metre intervals in buildings. We count them on a walk-through and list them in a sign schedule.
Most public, healthcare and government-facing buildings use both. We lay out one arrow per destination with both languages reading naturally from it, and check the Arabic with a fluent reader before production.
Fabrication typically takes 7 to 14 days after the sign schedule and designs are approved. Larger projects add time for the site walk, schedule and on-site prototype, so plan the signage alongside the fit-out rather than at the end of it.
Yes, if the system is designed for it. We use changeable insert frames for names that will change and keep the artwork files for every system we install, so a replacement insert matches the original.
Yes. We schedule installation out of hours or in phases where the building is in use, so clinics, hotels and offices keep running while signs go up.
