Pharmacy Signage in Dubai: From the Green Cross to the Prescription Counter

Someone with a feverish child at 1am is not browsing. They are driving slowly down a street in Al Barsha or JVC looking for one thing: a green cross that is lit. If your pharmacy sign is dim, hidden behind a palm tree, or reads as a generic shop, that customer drives on to the next one. Pharmacy signage in Dubai has to win that moment, and then it has to pass a DHA inspection, because the same board that pulls customers in is also a regulated item on the inspector's checklist.

Marhaba Advertising is a signage company in Dubai that designs, fabricates and installs pharmacy signs from its own workshop in Al Quoz Industrial Area 4. This page sits under our full industry signage Dubai range and covers every sign a pharmacy uses: licence-matched fascia signboards in 3D signage and illuminated channel letters, programmable LED signage including the green pharmacy cross, 24-hour signage, opening hours boards, window graphics, frosted glass sticker films for consultation rooms, aisle and category signs, prescription counter signage and the labels DHA inspectors check behind the counter. Every sign is drafted in Arabic and English, sized for real viewing distances, and checked against your DHA and trade licence wording before production starts.

The Customer Path

From Street to Counter: How a Dubai Pharmacy Sign System Works

A pharmacy is one of the few retail formats where signage has to do two jobs at once: sell and comply. That is what separates healthcare signage from ordinary retail signs. The easiest way to plan it is to follow the customer's path. Each zone below has a different reading distance, a different regulator interest and a different material that works best.

Plan all four together and the pharmacy looks consistent and passes inspection. Plan only the fascia and the rest gets patched with printed A4 sheets taped to glass, which is exactly what many Dubai pharmacies look like after their first year.

Dubai keeps adding pharmacies. Gulf News reported that DHA licensed 49 new pharmacies in the first quarter of 2024 alone, within a total of 5,020 licensed healthcare facilities in the emirate. In a market that crowded, the sign is often the only difference a passing customer notices, which is why consistent pharmacy branding across every sign pays for itself.

Zone 1

The Street: Fascia, Green Cross and 24-Hour Signs for Dubai Pharmacies

Licence-Matched Fascia Signboard

The fascia is the most regulated sign you own, and the pharmacy shop sign customers judge you by. DHA's outpatient pharmacy checklists ask inspectors to confirm that the pharmacy signboard matches the pharmacy name as per the DHA and DED licence. Under the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism signage rules, the storefront may also carry only one trade name. In practice that means the full licensed name goes on the board, in Arabic and English, and nothing else competes with it.

For the build itself, most pharmacies choose front-lit acrylic channel letters on an ACP cladding backing panel, because white or green faces read clearly at night and the ACP gives a clean, wipeable surface that copes with dust. Pharmacies on a tighter budget use a flex face signage lightbox, which costs less but looks more like a general store. A pharmacy 3D sign with deep letters reads well from both ends of a street. Premium chains increasingly use halo-lit letters from our backlit signage range for a calmer, clinical look, or polished faces from our acrylic signage Dubai work. For deep 3D letter builds, see our channel letters page.

Projecting signs read to drivers approaching along the road, not just people facing the door.

LED Pharmacy Cross

The green cross sign is the most recognised pharmacy symbol in the city, and it is the sign people actually search for at night. Manufacturer Q-lite lists standard pharmacy cross sizes of 90 x 90 cm and 130 x 130 cm, in single or double-sided versions that mount flat on a wall or project from a facade or post, with built-in automatic dimming that adjusts brightness to ambient light. Full-colour outdoor LED crosses sold in Europe come in sizes such as 648 x 648 mm, 1,032 x 1,032 mm and 1,284 x 1,284 mm with an IP65 outdoor rating.

For most Dubai street pharmacies, a double-sided projecting pharmacy cross sign does more work than a flat one, because drivers approach along the road, not face-on to the shopfront. A flat cross only reads when someone is already looking at your door. Programmable crosses can display time, temperature or short text as well as the cross itself. We supply and install both simple static green crosses and programmable LED signage crosses, and we size the cross to your frontage and street width rather than picking from a catalogue.

24-Hour Pharmacy Signage

If you hold a 24-hour licence, signage is part of the requirement, not a marketing extra. DHA's final inspection checklist for outpatient pharmacies requires clear signage to direct people that the facility is operating 24 hours. That sign has to work at the hour it matters, which means illuminated, readable from the road, and placed where a driver sees it before passing the frontage.

Common solutions are an illuminated "24 Hours" panel beside the fascia, a programmable message line built into the LED cross, or an LED neon "Open 24 Hours" sign in the window, the most common pharmacy neon sign we make. If you are weighing neon styles, our LED neon vs glass neon guide explains why LED neon suits pharmacies better: it runs cooler, uses less power and survives knocks near a busy door.

LED neon runs cool and survives knocks, which suits a window by a busy pharmacy door.

Zone 2

The Threshold: Windows, Doors and Opening Hours Boards in Dubai

Acrylic information board for pharmacy opening hours

Opening Hours and Shift Board

DHA's checklists require a display board showing the pharmacy's working hours and shift schedules where applicable. Many pharmacies handle this with a sheet of paper taped inside the door, which fades in weeks under Dubai sun and looks careless to an inspector and a customer alike. A cut vinyl hours panel on the door glass, or an acrylic board with changeable shift slots, lasts years and matches the fascia. If your hours change seasonally, for example during Ramadan, a board with removable time strips saves reprinting the whole panel.

Printed window graphics on a Dubai shopfront

Window Graphics and Promotions

Windows are where most pharmacies advertise with window stickers and printed graphics, and where most get into trouble (see the section on words a pharmacy window cannot use, below). Done well, window graphics carry brand colours, service icons such as blood pressure checks or home delivery, and seasonal campaigns printed through our large format printing service. Whatever pharmacy window stickers you choose, keep at least part of the glass clear so passers-by can see into the store. A pharmacy that blocks every window looks closed, and a clear view of a pharmacist in a white coat builds more trust than any print.

Frosted logo manifestation on a glass door

Door and Glass Manifestations

Full-height glass doors need manifestation strips at eye level so nobody walks into them, and a pharmacy sees more elderly and unwell visitors than most shops. We cut these in frosted or branded vinyl, which also gives you a tidy place for your logo and opening hours. For glass partitions inside, see the consultation room section below.

Zone 3

Inside the Store: Interior Pharmacy Signage Dubai Customers Rely On

Ceiling-hung category sign

Category and Aisle Signs

Good pharmacy interior signage starts with over-the-counter sections, which need fast navigation. A worried parent should find "Baby Care" or "Cold and Flu" from the door without asking. Hanging double-sided category signs, pharmacy shelf signs such as shelf-edge strips, and end-cap headers do this best. Interior signs belong to our wider indoor signage work, and larger pharmacies with mezzanines or multiple rooms benefit from proper pharmacy wayfinding through our wayfinding signage. The DHA checklist also points pharmacy egress and exit signs towards the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and the Dubai Universal Design Code, so interior signs should use high-contrast colours and clear type that older customers can read.

Counter header letters for a pharmacy dispensing area

Prescription Counter and Queue Signs

The dispensing counter needs a clear "Prescriptions" or "Collect Here" header so customers queue in the right place, and many pharmacies add a separate "Drop-Off" point to keep busy evenings moving. Illuminated counter headers, suspended acrylic panels and floor stickers for queue lines all work. A branded promotion counter is useful for skincare or vitamin launches, kept away from the dispensing area so promotional chatter does not mix with prescription conversations.

Frosted privacy film on a consultation room partition

Consultation Room Privacy

Pharmacies that offer consultations, vaccinations or health checks need privacy that still lets staff see in for safety. Frosted window film is the standard answer. Our office privacy frosting films obscure the view at seated and standing head height while leaving a clear band above. Where the consultation room faces the street, one-way vision graphics let staff see out while passers-by see only your branding.

Acrylic display frame with standoffs

Licence and Pharmacist Display Frames

Regulators expect certain documents to be on show. Pharmacies licensed in Dubai Healthcare City, for example, must display a copy of the Clinical Operating Permit in a public area, along with the name, licence number and expiry date of the Pharmacist-in-Charge, under the DHCC Pharmacy Standards. Mainland pharmacies are expected to display the DHA licence clearly. A branded acrylic display frame with standoffs keeps these documents flat, protected and easy to update when licences renew, rather than curling inside a cheap plastic sleeve.

Zone 4

Behind the Counter: Labels and Notices Dubai Inspectors Look For

Customers never see this zone, but inspectors always do. DHA's outpatient pharmacy checklist includes items that rely on clear labelling: the narcotic and controlled medicine cabinet must be designated by a label, and expired, returned or withdrawn medicines must sit in a dedicated, labelled cabinet or area. Fridge and cold-chain storage benefits from the same treatment.

These are small items, but handwritten marker labels on masking tape do not age well and can look careless during a visit. We produce engraved or printed acrylic labels, durable vinyl cabinet labels and wall-mounted notice frames in the same style as your front-of-house signage. They cost little and make the back room look as controlled as it actually is.

Advertising Rules

Words a Dubai Pharmacy Window Cannot Use

This is the section most sign companies skip, and it is where we see the most avoidable problems. Pharmacy window graphics are advertising, and advertising by healthcare providers in Dubai has rules.

the best100%no side effectsimmediate resultsuniquemiraculousguaranteed to work

DHA's healthcare advertising standards, reported by Khaleej Times in September 2026, ban absolute or exaggerated wording such as "the best", "100%", "no side effects", "immediate results", "unique", "miraculous" and "guaranteed to work", and they prohibit claims that a provider is better than competitors or messages built on fear. Those standards are aimed at DHA-licensed facilities and professionals, which includes licensed pharmacies. A window vinyl that says "Best Prices in Dubai" or "100% Genuine Results" is therefore a risk, however normal it looks next to a supermarket.

Prescription medicines are a second line. The DHCC Pharmacy Standards state that prescription-only and pharmacist-only medicines are not included in window displays or otherwise advertised to the public. That rule is written for Dubai Healthcare City pharmacies, but it reflects a principle that applies everywhere: your window can promote over-the-counter products, services and your brand, not prescription brands.

Finally, advertising medicine, clinics or health products outside your premises needs more than a design. The Dubai Development Authority's advertising permit requirements list an NOC from the Dubai Health Authority or Ministry of Health when the advertising involves medicines, clinics, hospitals or health products.

What this means when we design your window

We write factual lines ("Open 24 Hours", "Free Home Delivery", "Blood Pressure Checks Available"), we avoid superlatives and outcome promises, and we flag any copy that names prescription products before it goes to print. Final approval of advertising content sits with you and your regulator, but catching it at the artwork stage is far cheaper than scraping vinyl off glass.

Night Performance

The 2am Test: Night Performance of Pharmacy Signs in Dubai

Most signs are judged in daylight on the day they are installed. A pharmacy sign should be judged at 2am, when it is doing its most important work. These are the night-time details we check on every pharmacy job.

Brightness balance

A cross that is too bright in a residential street draws complaints from apartments above and can glare in a driver's eyes. Too dim and it disappears against shop lights next door. Crosses with automatic ambient dimming, which manufacturers such as Q-lite build in, solve most of this without anyone touching a switch.

Animation restraint

Programmable crosses can scroll, flash and animate. Just because they can does not mean they should. Constant flashing looks cheap, irritates neighbours and may conflict with building rules. A slow, steady pattern or a static cross with a clock or temperature line reads as calm and medical.

Colour accuracy

A pharmacy green that looks right on screen can shift towards blue or yellow once LEDs are lit behind an acrylic face. We test the face colour lit, not just under workshop lights, before we cut the full set.

Timer settings

Pharmacies that are not open 24 hours should switch the cross off, or change its message, at closing time. A lit cross outside a closed pharmacy sends a worried customer to a locked door, which is worse than no sign at all.

Neighbour signs

In a strip of shops, your fascia competes with a bakery, a laundry and a mobile shop next door, all lit. Contrast, not raw brightness, is what makes yours stand out. White letters on a deep green panel usually beat green letters on white in a bright row.

Materials

Pharmacy Signage Materials Compared for Dubai Conditions

Dubai is hard on signs: summer surface temperatures, dust, humidity near the coast and strong UV all shorten the life of cheap materials. This is how the common pharmacy sign materials compare.

MaterialHow it performs for a pharmacy
Acrylic channel letters with LED modulesCrisp, even lighting and a professional finish. The most common choice for a pharmacy fascia. Needs quality cast acrylic to resist yellowing in UV.
Halo-lit stainless steel or aluminium lettersPremium and calm, light glows on the wall behind each letter. Best for clinic-style pharmacies and chains. Less readable from long distance than front-lit faces.
Flex face lightboxThe lowest cost per square metre for a large illuminated area. Fine for budget fit-outs, but the printed face fades faster and looks less clinical.
ACP backing panelsWeather-resistant aluminium composite that gives letters a flat, cleanable background and hides wiring. Pairs well with acrylic letters.
LED pharmacy crossPurpose-built units with dimming and programming. Choose outdoor-rated units for street use and double-sided units for projecting mounts.
Vinyl and frosted filmsFor windows, doors, hours panels and privacy. Cast vinyl outlasts calendered vinyl on sun-facing glass.
Printed and engraved acrylicFor interior signs, display frames and back-of-house labels. Easy to clean with standard pharmacy disinfectants when the right finish is chosen.

Budgeting

Pharmacy Signage Costs in Dubai for 2026

A pharmacy sign budget has two parts: the permit and the build. They are often lumped together, but they come from different places.

Permit fees

Ground floor shop signage (DDA)AED 500 / year
Window sticker (DDA)AED 1,000 / year
Mainland DM signboard permitAED 500 to 2,500

The Dubai Development Authority's published 2026 advertising permit fees apply in DDA-managed communities. Mainland signboard permits run through Dubai Municipality, and Noble Core Ventures' July 2026 signboard permit guide puts the indicative range at AED 500 to AED 2,500 depending on sign type and size.

Fabrication and installation

AED 15,000 to 80,000

The same Noble Core Ventures guide estimates this range for a decent illuminated fascia, describing the figures as indicative market ranges, not official tariffs. A small pharmacy with a modest frontage and a standard cross usually sits at the lower end. A corner unit with two fascias, a projecting double-sided cross, halo-lit letters and full window graphics sits much higher.

What moves a pharmacy quote most

  • FrontageFrontage width and the number of fascias (corner units need two).
  • Cross typeStatic or programmable, single or double-sided, flat or projecting.
  • Letter constructionFlex face, front-lit acrylic or halo-lit metal.
  • 24-hour requirementsExtra illuminated panels or message lines.
  • Interior scopeCategory signs, counter headers, privacy films, display frames and labels.
  • AccessGround-floor street units are simpler than units with high canopies or mall rules.

We price after a site visit, because a pharmacy in a mall, a street unit in JVC and a corner plot on a main road are three different jobs. WhatsApp a photo of your frontage to +971 52 953 6720 for a first estimate, or use our contact us page.

Where You Trade

Pharmacy Sign Rules by Location: Mainland, Malls and Dubai Healthcare City

Where your pharmacy sits in Dubai changes who you answer to.

Mainland street pharmacies

DHA licenses the pharmacy, DET governs the trade-name signage, and Dubai Municipality issues the advertising permit. Arabic text and artwork that matches the DET trade name exactly are standard permit expectations, according to Noble Core Ventures' 2026 permit guide. Upper-floor units cannot place trade-name signs on the building facade under DET rules.

Mall pharmacies

The mall operator's design criteria decide letter height, illumination style, colours and installation times, on top of authority rules. Mall pharmacies usually cannot add projecting crosses and must fit signs within a defined bulkhead. We work to the mall's tenant design manual and coordinate installation slots with mall management.

Dubai Healthcare City

Pharmacies here operate under the DHCC Pharmacy Standards, which add specific display duties, including showing the Clinical Operating Permit and the Pharmacist-in-Charge details, and keeping prescription-only medicines out of window displays.

Inside supermarkets or hypermarkets

DET's one trade name per storefront rule means the pharmacy brand usually lives inside, on its counter, bulkhead and hanging signs, rather than on the main facade. Our supermarket signage Dubai page covers how in-store concessions are signed.

Free zones

Free zones run their own permit schedules. Our Mena Jebel Ali page explains how a free zone authority, rather than Dubai Municipality, governs signage in that area.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: Pharmacy Signage in Dubai

Yes. Arabic text is a standard requirement for exterior signboard permits in Dubai, and DHA facility guidelines place the Arabic translation above the English on health facility signage. We draft both scripts in-house so the two names balance visually and both match your licence.

The licensed name. DHA inspection checklists confirm that the pharmacy signboard matches the name on the DHA and DED licence, and DET allows only one trade name per storefront. If you want the shorter name on the board, the licence usually has to change first. We can use the short name inside the store and on promotions.

Yes. DHA's final outpatient pharmacy checklist requires clear signage directing people to the fact that the facility operates 24 hours. In practice that means an illuminated 24-hour panel, a message line on a programmable LED cross, or an LED neon sign that is readable from the road at night.

Promote over-the-counter products, services and your brand, but keep prescription products out of the window. DHCC Pharmacy Standards state that prescription-only and pharmacist-only medicines are not included in window displays, and DHA advertising standards ban claims such as "the best", "100%" and "no side effects". We flag risky copy before printing.

It depends on street width and how far away drivers first see it. Manufacturer Q-lite lists 90 x 90 cm and 130 x 130 cm as standard pharmacy cross sizes. On a narrow residential street, the smaller size projecting from the facade often works better than a larger flat unit facing the wrong way.

Programmable crosses can show animations, time, temperature and text. We recommend a steady or slowly changing display, automatic dimming and a timer that matches your opening hours, because constant flashing irritates neighbours and may conflict with landlord or building rules. Check your building's rules before choosing animated modes.

Permit fees start around AED 500 per year for ground floor shop signage in DDA communities, and Noble Core Ventures' 2026 guide gives AED 500 to AED 2,500 as the indicative mainland permit range. The same guide estimates AED 15,000 to AED 80,000 for a decent illuminated fascia. We confirm your exact price after a site visit.

No. The DHA licence and any health advertising NOC are obtained by you or your licensing consultant. We make sure the sign wording matches your approved licence exactly, prepare the drawings a signage permit file needs, and build and install everything once approvals are in place.

Yes. On top of authority rules, mall operators set their own tenant design criteria for letter height, lighting, colours and install times, and most do not allow projecting crosses. We work from the mall's tenant design manual and book installation through mall management.

Yes. We produce delivery bike box branding, van wraps and fleet graphics in the same colours and logo as your pharmacy signs, so a delivery rider in your area looks like part of the same brand as your storefront.
