Supermarket Signage in Dubai: Fascias, Aisle Signs and Promotions That Move Shoppers and Stock

A shopper with fifteen minutes before school pickup walks into your supermarket, needs nappies, eggs and dates, and walks out with only two of the three because they could not find the third. They do not complain. They just try a different store next week. In grocery retail, signage is the silent staff member who answers "where is it?" and "how much is it?" for every customer at the same time, and in Dubai, with neighbourhood stores, co-operatives and hypermarkets competing on almost every street, that silent staff member decides more baskets than most owners realise.

Marhaba Advertising is a signage company in Dubai that designs, fabricates and installs supermarket signage from its workshop in Al Quoz Industrial Area 4. This page sits under our full industry signage Dubai range and covers grocery store signage for every format: illuminated fascias in 3D signage, car park and entrance signs, hanging aisle signs, department and fresh counter signs, checkout signs, shelf edge strips and price tags, unit price labels, window graphics and the promotional signage that changes every few weeks through our large format printing service, plus display stands, sampling counters and delivery vehicle branding. Everything is produced in-house and rolled out store by store by our own team.

How We Plan It

Four Layers of a Dubai Supermarket Sign System

The biggest mistake we see in supermarket signage is treating every sign the same way. A supermarket's signs change at four different speeds, and each layer deserves a different budget and material.

  1. Layer oneChanges every few years
    Permanent exterior signs

The fascia, pylon or totem, car park signs and entrance branding. These change once in several years, so they get premium materials, illumination and careful design.

  2. Layer twoChanges with the layout
    Navigation

Aisle signs, department headers, fresh counter signs, checkout and customer service signs. These change when the layout changes, perhaps once a year or after a refit, so they should be durable but easy to update.

  3. Layer threeChanges constantly
    Shelf and price

Shelf edge strips, price tags and unit price labels. These change constantly, so they need a system that staff can update in seconds.

  4. Layer fourChanges every few weeks
    Promotions

Window graphics, hanging promotional banners, end-cap headers, floor stickers and seasonal displays. These change every few weeks, so they should use affordable, quickly replaceable prints in reusable frames.

Plan the four layers together and the store looks consistent while spending money where it lasts. Plan only the fascia and the inside ends up covered in handwritten offers taped to shelves.

Layer One: Permanent

Layer One: Supermarket Fascias and Exterior Signs in Dubai

Main Fascia and Logo

The supermarket fascia is the biggest single advert in any supermarket signage Dubai project, and the sign people use to find you. For neighbourhood stores and supermarkets on residential streets, illuminated letters or a full-width lightbox both work. Front-lit acrylic letters or deep channel letters on an ACP cladding band look clean and modern, while a full-width flex face signage lightbox lights up a long frontage at a lower cost.

Large stores often add illuminated department words such as "Fresh", "Bakery" or "Pharmacy" in backlit signage along the facade, but these must be generic words, not separate brand names (see the section on in-store brands, below). Our wider outdoor signage and shop signage Dubai pages cover the full range of exterior options.

Letters on an ACP band: the clean, modern fascia most neighbourhood stores choose.

Car Park, Entrance and Trolley Bay Signs

Larger supermarkets and hypermarkets with car parks need directional signs from the road entrance, parking and trolley bay signs, "Entrance" and "Exit" signs that are visible from the car park, and accessible parking signs. Clear entrance signage matters more than it seems: a shopper who walks to the wrong door with a trolley is already irritated before they reach the first aisle.

Window Graphics and Opening Hours

Supermarket window graphics carry brand messages, delivery app badges, opening hours and seasonal campaigns. Leave enough clear glass for shoppers to see produce and staff inside, because a fully covered window makes a grocery store look closed or neglected. A clean, durable opening hours panel on the entrance glass, with a changeable strip for Ramadan timings, saves reprinting the door vinyl every year. Where windows face hard afternoon sun, one-way vision graphics can carry a campaign outside while reducing glare for staff inside.

Layer Two: Navigation

Layer Two: Aisle and Department Navigation for Dubai Supermarkets

Double-sided ceiling-hung sign

Hung above the shelving and double-sided, so stock never blocks the aisle sign.

Hanging Aisle Signs

Aisle signs are the backbone of supermarket navigation. Hanging double-sided aisle signs at the head of every aisle, listing the main categories in that aisle, let shoppers scan the store from the main walkway. Good aisle hanging signs share a few traits: they hang above the top of the shelving so stock never blocks them, they read from both directions, they use a consistent number plus a short category list ("Aisle 6: Rice, Pasta, Pulses"), and they use slot-in panels so categories can be updated when the planogram changes without replacing the whole sign. Arabic and English on every aisle sign is standard practice in Dubai stores and serves a very mixed customer base.

Check the ceiling first

Before fixing anything to the ceiling, check clearances to sprinklers, lighting and ceiling services with your fit-out contractor or building management. Signs that block sprinkler heads or light fittings can cause problems at inspection.

Large printed wall graphic

Department and Fresh Counter Signs

Department signs mark the big zones: fresh produce, bakery, butchery, fish, deli, dairy, frozen, household and health and beauty. These are where a supermarket expresses its personality, with large wall graphics behind counters through our wall graphics Dubai service, illuminated headers and, for bakery and coffee corners, warm neon light signage. Fresh produce signs work best with simple category words and origin markers, while counter signs at butchery and fish counters often include service information such as cutting and cleaning options. Larger stores benefit from a proper wayfinding signage plan covering toilets, prayer rooms, customer service and exits, and our wider indoor signage range covers the rest.

Projecting sign above a service point

Checkout and Customer Service Signs

Checkout signage numbers every lane, marks express lanes ("10 Items or Less"), self-checkouts and accessible lanes, and signals which lanes are open. Lane number signs with an illuminated open or closed indicator help shoppers choose quickly and reduce queues at one end. Customer service, returns, delivery collection and loyalty card desks each need their own clear sign above head height so people can find them from the entrance.

Layer Three: Shelf and Price

Layer Three: Shelf Edge, Price and Unit Price Signage in Dubai

Price display is regulated, not just a design choice. The UAE Ministry of Economy's pricing policy for nine categories of essential goods, effective from 2 January 2025, covers cooking oil, eggs, dairy, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread and wheat. It prohibits price increases on those goods without prior ministry approval and requires retail stores and online merchants of more than 1,000 square metres to display unit prices clearly, using standardised units of measurement.

Cooking oilEggsDairyRiceSugarPoultryLegumesBreadWheat

For a large supermarket, that makes unit price labels a compliance item. A shelf price tag that shows only "AED 12.95" for a 1.8 kg bag of rice is no longer enough in a store above that size; the label should also show the price per kilogram (or per litre, or per unit) in a clear, consistent format. Consistency is the hard part: if one shelf shows price per 100 g and the next shows price per kilogram, shoppers cannot compare.

Example shelf edge label layout

Selling price and unit price in a fixed layout, the same on every shelf.

What a good shelf edge system looks like

  • Shelf edge stripsClear shelf edge strips that hold printed tickets at a consistent height along every gondola.
  • Fixed label layoutShelf edge labels with the product name, selling price and unit price in a fixed layout, in Arabic and English where possible.
  • Colour-coded offersColour-coded tickets for offers (for example, yellow for promotions) so shoppers instantly see what is discounted.
  • Talkers used sparinglyShelf talkers and wobblers used sparingly to highlight new products or offers, not on every shelf.
  • Produce boardsFresh produce price boards that staff can update daily, often with chalkboard-style or changeable inserts.

We supply shelf edge strips, ticket holders, printed price tags, unit price labels, shelf talkers and produce boards in bulk, matched to your brand. Many large stores now use electronic shelf labels driven by their point-of-sale system; we do not supply electronic label systems, but we produce the printed signs, headers and strips around them.

Layer Four: Promotions

Layer Four: Promotional Signage and the Dubai Promotion Permit Calendar

Promotional signage moves stock, and in Dubai it also runs on a permit calendar. According to Noble Core Ventures' 2026 guide to promotion permits, advertised discounts, prize draws, giveaways, loyalty rewards and sampling by Dubai-licensed businesses generally need a promotion permit from the Department of Economy and Tourism. The same guide suggests allowing at least 30 days for a simple discount campaign, 30 to 45 days for prize draws and 45 to 60 days for mall activations, and warns that lead times stretch during peak seasons and Ramadan.

30+ daysSimple discount campaign
30 to 45 daysPrize draws
45 to 60 daysMall activations

That timing changes how promotional signage should be planned:

Book the permit first, then the print

Design the campaign artwork early, but print and install only once the permit is approved and the dates are confirmed, so you do not pay for signs carrying the wrong dates or terms.

Build a promotional calendar

Ramadan, Eid, back-to-school, the summer sales season and year-end promotions come round every year. A calendar agreed with us at the start of the year lets us prepare artwork in advance and deliver on time even in busy months.

Reuse the hardware

Invest once in hanging banner frames, end-cap header holders, poster frames and floor graphic positions, then swap printed faces each campaign. Our roll-up banners and pop-up display stands suit short promotions, and sampling events need promotion counters that suppliers can brand.

Keep weekly flyers organised

Printed promotional flyers belong in proper brochure stands at the entrance, not stacked on the floor by the door.

Remove expired promotions promptly

Out-of-date promotional signs undermine trust and can create pricing disputes at the till.

Display options

For a wider view of display options, see our display stand Dubai hub. We produce the signs; the promotion permit itself is applied for by the retailer.

In-Store Brands

In-Store Brands and Concessions: One Trade Name on a Dubai Storefront

Supermarkets increasingly host other businesses: a pharmacy counter, an in-store bakery brand, a coffee kiosk, a money exchange, a mobile phone shop. Each wants its own sign on the building. In most cases, they cannot have one there.

Under the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism's storefront rules, reported by Khaleej Times in May 2026, only one trade name is permitted on a storefront, with no option to display multiple trade names on the same facade. That makes interior signage the place where concession brands live. What works:

01

Use generic words outside

The facade can carry department words such as "Bakery" or "Pharmacy" as part of the supermarket's own signage, without the concession's brand name.

02

Give concessions a bulkhead inside

Each concession gets a branded header or bulkhead sign above its counter, designed to sit within the supermarket's overall look.

03

Use counters and displays

Branded counters, display stands and wall graphics give the concession presence without breaking the storefront rule.

Pharmacies inside supermarkets have extra rules of their own on name matching and licence display, covered on our pharmacy signage Dubai page. Coffee corners can follow our planned cafe signage Dubai guidance, and stand-alone bakeries our planned bakery signage Dubai page.

What Goes Wrong

Cold Aisles, Misting and Butcher Counters: Where Supermarket Signs Fail in Dubai

Supermarkets have some of the most difficult environments for signs inside a single building, and failures are usually about humidity, temperature and cleaning rather than design.

Freezer and chiller doors

Signs and stickers on chiller and freezer doors face condensation every time the door opens. Paper tickets curl and standard adhesives lose grip in the cold. Use plastic tickets in holders and adhesives rated for low temperatures, and keep graphics on the frame rather than the glass where condensation collects.

Produce misting

Fresh produce areas with misting systems keep signs permanently damp. Foam board swells and paper prints run. Use rigid plastic, acrylic or aluminium composite with sealed edges near mist bars.

Butcher and fish counters

Hygiene rules mean these areas are washed down often with strong cleaners. Signs need smooth, non-porous, wipeable surfaces, with no fabric or textured prints where dirt can build up, and fixings that do not trap water.

Bakery ovens and hot counters

Signs above ovens and hot food counters face heat and grease. Keep vinyl and acrylic away from direct heat sources and choose materials that tolerate warmth and can be degreased.

Trolley strikes

Low-level signs, end-cap headers and floor-standing displays get hit by trolleys daily. Use impact-resistant plastics and mount wall signs above trolley height.

Floor graphics in high traffic

Promotional floor stickers wear quickly at entrances and checkouts. Use anti-slip, traffic-rated laminate and plan to replace them at the end of each campaign.

Sun through the windows

Window graphics and price boards near glass fade fast in direct sun. Use UV-stable inks and laminates, especially on south and west-facing frontages.

Small Format

Mini Marts and Grocery Shops: Small-Format Signage for Dubai Neighbourhoods

Not every grocery store is a hypermarket. Dubai's residential communities are full of mini marts, groceries and convenience stores, often on the ground floor of residential towers. They need a scaled-down version of the same system:

  • A clear grocery shop signboard with the licensed trade name, ideally illuminated for evening trade, in Arabic and English.
  • Window graphics showing delivery service, a phone or WhatsApp number and opening hours.
  • A small set of aisle or shelf headers so customers can find categories in a compact space.
  • Price tickets and shelf strips, even if the store is below the 1,000 square metre unit price threshold, because clear prices build trust.
  • Delivery branding, because many mini marts make much of their money from delivery. Our delivery bike box branding and van branding Dubai services turn delivery riders into moving adverts for the store, and chains can scale this through fleet branding.
Where to spend first

Mini mart signage is also where budget matters most, so we recommend investing in the fascia and delivery branding first and adding interior signs over time.

Delivery branding turns every run into an advert for the store.

Budgeting

Supermarket Signage Costs in Dubai for 2026

Supermarket signage Dubai budgets split into one-off permanent signs and recurring promotional print.

Permits

Ground floor shop signage (DDA)AED 500 / year
Window sticker (DDA)AED 1,000 / year
Mainland DM permit (indicative)AED 500 to 2,500
DET promotion permit, discount campaign (indicative)AED 500 to 5,000

The Dubai Development Authority's published fees apply in DDA-managed communities. For mainland premises, Noble Core Ventures' July 2026 signboard permit guide gives an indicative Dubai Municipality permit range of AED 500 to AED 2,500 depending on sign type and size. Promotion permits from DET are separate, and Noble Core Ventures' 2026 promotion permit guide puts indicative costs for discount campaigns at AED 500 to AED 5,000.

Permanent signs

AED 15,000 to 80,000

The 2026 signboard permit guide estimates AED 15,000 to AED 80,000 to fabricate and install a decent illuminated fascia, as an indicative market range. Large stores with long facades, pylons and department words sit higher, mini marts with a single lightbox lower.

Navigation and shelf systems

Aisle signs, department headers and shelf edge strips are priced per item and fall sharply in unit cost for larger stores and chains.

Promotions

Promotional print is a recurring cost. Reusable frames reduce it, because only the printed faces change each campaign.

What moves a supermarket quote

  • Store sizeStore size and number of aisles, departments and checkouts.
  • FasciaFascia length, lighting and whether you need a pylon.
  • LanguagesNumber of languages on aisle and shelf signs.
  • Unit price labelsUnit price label volume for stores above 1,000 square metres.
  • CampaignsNumber of campaigns per year and whether frames are reused.
  • RolloutsMulti-store rollouts, where standard designs reduce cost per store.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: Supermarket Signage in Dubai

Plan four layers: an illuminated fascia and exterior signs, aisle and department navigation, shelf edge strips with price and unit price labels, and reusable frames for promotions. Add car park, entrance and checkout signs for larger stores, and branded delivery vehicles if you deliver.

Under the UAE Ministry of Economy's pricing policy effective from January 2025, retail stores and online merchants larger than 1,000 square metres must display unit prices clearly using standardised units of measurement. We print shelf labels with both the selling price and the unit price in a consistent layout.

Advertised discounts and promotions by Dubai-licensed businesses generally need a DET promotion permit. A 2026 industry guide suggests allowing at least 30 days for simple discount campaigns and longer for draws and mall activations. We recommend designing early but printing once the permit dates are confirmed.

Usually not under its own brand name. DET rules allow only one trade name per storefront, so concessions are branded inside with bulkheads, counters and displays. The facade can carry generic department words such as "Bakery" or "Pharmacy" as part of the supermarket's own signage.

Hang them above the top of the shelving so stock never blocks them, make them double-sided, use a clear aisle number plus a short category list in Arabic and English, and use slot-in panels so categories can change with the planogram. Check sprinkler and lighting clearances before fixing anything to the ceiling.

Yes, if the materials suit the area. We use plastic tickets in holders and low-temperature adhesives on chillers, rigid plastic or sealed aluminium composite near misting bars, and smooth, wipeable surfaces at butcher and fish counters. Paper and foam board are what usually fail.

Exterior permits run from about AED 500 a year in DDA communities, with an indicative AED 500 to AED 2,500 mainland range in a 2026 industry guide, which also estimates AED 15,000 to AED 80,000 for an illuminated fascia. Aisle, shelf and promotional signs are priced per item. We quote after a store survey.

Yes. We produce shelf edge strips, ticket holders, printed price tags, unit price labels, shelf talkers, wobblers and produce boards in bulk, matched to your brand and planogram, and we can supply standard kits so every branch of a chain uses the same system.

No. Electronic shelf label systems come from technology suppliers linked to your point-of-sale system. We produce the printed signage around them, including aisle signs, department headers, shelf edge strips, promotional headers and printed labels for areas without electronic labels.

Yes. We produce delivery bike box branding, van graphics and fleet branding in the same identity as your store signs, so every delivery rider in the neighbourhood advertises your supermarket.
